Mangoky Reserve is well known at the Ministry of Environment

On the 14th July, a meeting of the Ministry of Environment and Development (Ministère de l’Environnement et du Development Durable, MEDD), Asity and other NGOs, was summoned in the building of the Ministry in Antananarivo. Asity, member of BirdLife International, is the official partner of the Ministry of Environment for the protection of a number of nature conservation areas, including the large Mangoky-Ihotry Wetland Complex in western Madagascar, where also Mangoky Reserve is found. For this area, Asity has revised the Environmental Management and Development Plan (PAG – Plan d’Aménagement et de Gestion) and officially included Mangoky Reserve as the responsible partner for protecting the White House area on the shores of the Mangoky River.
For Mangoky Reserve, our voluntary Malagasy co-workers Mr. Elysé Rakoto and Mrs. Hantanirin’ijoa Rakotondrainy participated in the meeting at the Ministry. Asity presented Mangoky Reserve to the staff of the Ministry of Environment as well as to NGOs working for the protection of the environment in Madagascar.

To our delight it turned out that the ministry and the invited NGOs already knew well about Mangoky Reserve and its activities. The representative from the Ministry of Environment thanked Mangoky Reserve for its effort for working in this particularly remote place. They asked Hanta and Elyse about our plans for Eco-Tourism, about the protection activities and the cooperation with the local people. Finally, the Minister of Environment said that they appreciate our presence there and ask us to intensify our work at the White House; they also request us to take over conservation activities in other protected areas; this is an honourable request but would exceed our possibilities.
Unfortunately, the revised PAG is not yet completely ready to be presented to and singed of the Ministry of Environment, because the revision of the work in other protected areas is not yet finished. We are patiently waiting for the finalisation of the entire national Environmental Management and Development Plan where Mangoky Reserve as one of the conservation partners will be represented.
